The Torah reader uses a pointer, often called a "yad", meaning "hand", to help follow the place in the scroll.
The torah pointer, made with the shape of a hand with an extended forefinger at the end of a long pointer, assists the reader of the text of the Torah, preventing possible error in reading and allowing the reader to follow place without touching the scroll.
This Torah pointer yad is made of silver plated over a metal core and features scenes of Jerusalem. The top of the Torah pointer yad is decorated with the Hoshen.
The Hoshen stones are the 12 stones found in the sacred breastplate, known as the Hoshen that is worn by the Israelite High Priests. The Hoshen functioned as a mediator between God and the twelve tribes of Israel. The stones symbolized the connection between the ambitions of man and nature’s perfection.
